As cores e formas que se sobrepõem e associam quase aleatoriamente nestas pinturas, tentam apropriar-se da vida do jardim, em que as plantas crescem livremente e os dias de sol desenham sombras onde querem. Através da impressão direta, do seu contorno delineado, ou do registo da observação, as marcas das formas vegetais efémeras, como pegadas da sua existência breve, tornam-se permanentes, congregam-se e misturam-se como formas imaginadas e outros elementos pictóricos. A surpresa e diversidade, a riqueza formal e cromática, a individualidade de uma simples erva ou folha, são neste momento, um motivo de fascinação para mim: a natureza magnífica, mesmo a que pode parecer insignificante e pisamos aos pés. É sobre essa insignificância magnífica, esse brilho involuntário, essa surpresa e diversidade que quero debruçar-me. Um olhar perante a fragilidade da beleza e da vida que tão frequentemente tomamos como banal, imutável e garantida. Este é o ponto de partida para uma série de pinturas a óleo sobre vidro acrílico. Na técnica que utilizo, a pintura é realizada totalmente pelo inverso do suporte e vista depois através da superfície, cuja transparência, enquanto permite a visibilidade, cria igualmente uma barreira. Este método permite (mesmo que apenas aparentemente) o acesso a todo o processo da pintura, tornando visíveis as suas camadas sucessivas. Remete, assim, pelo tema e pela construção da imagem, para a história da Pintura e para a nossa herança cultural. “As possibilidades e os processos do meio tornam-se tema da própria pintura, à medida que esta abdica de um compromisso com a sua função simbólica. Este movimento não implica porém uma renúncia às linguagens figurativas a favor da abstracção, promovendo mesmo uma existência simultânea e uma oscilação entre ambas, como encontramos no artista Gerhard Richter. Reportando ao pintor alemão referido, mas também a Helena Almeida, poder-se-iadestacar a série de fotografias pintadas a óleo que Assunção Melo intitulou “Mergulho”. Neste conjunto, composto por uma série de várias fotografias coladas directamente sobre a parede, uma figura aparece imersa em tinta azul, que a vai rodeando, ocultando ou descobrindo. A protagonista é a própria autora, que parece interagir com as manchas detinta, rebatendo desta forma os dois tempos que sabemos serem obrigatórios ao processo. À reflexão sobre as possibilidades da pintura soma-se assim um sentido de dramatização e teatralidade que atravessa toda a obra apresentada nesta exposição. Também na pintura, em ambos os conjuntos apresentados e sobretudo nas telas demenor formato, encontramos estas figuras em suspenso. Representadas em posições habitualmente transitórias e com gestos exagerados, parecem o registo de uma performance à qual só temos acesso através de um instante. Por outro lado, contrariamente à ilusão proposta, a consciência da natureza própria do meio encontra-se sempre presente.A zonas altamente detalhadas sucedem-se outras onde está visível apenas a estrutura do desenho, como se a própria pintura tivesse sido abandonada, mantida ela própria em suspenso. A obra de Assunção Melo parece assim hesitar entre pólos opostos, alternando entre o rigor e a espontaneidade na execução, a ficção e o que a artista denomina como um “nível de verdade” da pintura. No fundo como o próprio mergulho que lhe serve de tema, é na fronteira entre dois meios diferentes que ele acontece. O título da exposição recusa-se também a clarificar o seu significado, Outras Figuras parece contradizer-se, negar-se a si próprio, ecoando o oxímoro do poema de Mário de Sá-Carneiro: “Eu não sou eu nem sou o outro,/ Sou qualquer coisa de intermédio.” ou o “Je estun autre” de Rimbaud. Este confronto com o que permanece irresoluto será talvez, de forma paradoxal, o que de mais consensual existe na produção e contemplação artísticacontemporânea.” Excerto do texto de João Sousa Pinto para a exposição Outras Figuras.
